Indian OMCs didn\u2019t change the prices for almost four years, but the conflict between the US and Iran changed everything. Brent Crude crossed $120 dollar a barrel for the first time in April-May 2026, since the Ukraine-Russia war in 2022 (even in 2022 Brent crude had crossed the $120 mark).<\/p>\r\n<p>Why is this data important? Because Brent crude traded at <a href=\"https:\/\/countryeconomy.com\/raw-materials\/brent?dr=2026-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$66.6<\/a> per barrel in January 2026. Yes, so we are looking here at an increase of almost 81%. Even today (August 28), Brent crude is currently trading at <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/brent-crude-oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$88.29<\/a>. <strong>This means, between January 2026 and August 2026, Brent crude prices increased by over 30%. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Oil is an international commodity. Its price effects are felt globally across countries. For an oil-importing country like India, such a dramatic increase in fuel prices means a larger current account deficit. India imports close to 85% of its crude oil requirement.<\/p>\r\n<p>In fact, government data quoted by <strong>TOI <\/strong>reports that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) were losing <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/oil-cos-losing-rs-1000-crore-a-day-hike-in-prices-imminent-hints-petroleum-minister-hardeep-singh-puri\/articleshow\/131051918.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INR 1000<\/a> crore a day in May 2026 for not being able to pass the crude price hike to Indian consumers. Finally, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/explainers\/india-fuel-price-hike-comparison-west-asia-war-14011513.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel price hike of INR 3<\/a> was announced on 15th May 2026.
